Forty-six area kids got the holiday treat of shopping with a shop this season.
Every year the school counselors from around Audrain County, grades kindergarten through fifth grade, choose kids to participate in the Shop With A Cop program. This way, we can ensure the kids who would benefit most from the program are being chosen. The Audrain County Sheriff’s Office started Shop with a Cop in 2016, accepting at least 10 children from each of the county’s elementary schools.
Funding for the gift cards come from community donations. Officers attend festivals and events throughout the year, staffing booths. They also sell t-shirts. One Missouri State Highway Patrol officer’s wife even baked for a cookie sale - and people strolling the aisles at Walmart who encounter Shop with a Cop often donate on the spot.
And best of all, kids get the chance to stroll the aisles with participating officials - a truly magical experience.
Walmart staffers provide the gift wrapping.
The program has touched the lives of many kids over the years and is a collaborative effort including members of Audrain County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Mexico Public Safety Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
