The Mexico Public Schools Board of Education is once again whole with seven members.
The board held a special meeting on Thursday, July 27, to interview four candidates for an open seat on the board that was created last month. After the interview process, Michelle Stephens emerged as the winner. She will finish the remainder of the term which ends April 2024.
The vote was 5-1 to appoint Stephens to the board with Board Member Scott Nichols being the only no vote. Nichols had supported and nominated former Board Member Heather DeMint at the board’s regular meeting.
At the board meeting on Tuesday DeMint received votes from Nichols and Board President Todd Yager, however, the other members of the board wanted an opportunity to interview the other candidates. After the interview process concluded Nichols said the board did the right thing.
“I know the other night I made a motion,” Nichols said. “I am looking back and I’m glad it happened like this. No matter what happens here tonight it’s not personal to anyone here. It’s what we think is the best.”
Board member Keith Louder commended all four for having the poise to come before the board and speak in front of a crowd.
“It’s never comfortable and I thought about the process,” Louder said. “How often does a person sit through an interview where everybody gets to watch?
“I hope that whatever decision is made tonight those of you who are not selected would not sour you on the future,” Louder added. “Positions do come open every year.”
In her closing statement, Stephens said she heard the comment about wanting experience on the board but she believes new people come to the board every April and her new perspective will be a fresh change.
“The board changes every April,” Stephens said. “New people mean new perspectives, new skills and often result in positive change. Change and growth is what we’re about.”
