After winning his first career wrestling state title for Centralia this year, Rex Bryson wasn’t done.
The Class 1 165-pound state champion Bryson finished third at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Nationals tournament over three days during the March 28 weekend in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Bryson went 8-1 and beat multiple state champions and nationally ranked opponents.
Bryson won by an 18-2 technical fall over Georgia’s Cale Prater, and then won by pinfall over North Carolina state champion Imon Freeman, Tennessee state champion Ayden Hood and New York’s Ryan Ciardullo. He then lost by decision to Georgia state champion Brock Weaver in the quarterfinals but closed his weekend with four straight wins, including by a 15-5 major decision over Pennsylvania’s Cole Albert, pinfall over Pennsylvania’s nationally ranked 13th wrestler McKaden Speece, a 12-5 decision over Indiana’s Jackson Bradley and a revenge 13-8 decision victory over Weaver.
