River Carey was interested in Southwest Baptist University before being offered a cheerleading scholarship.
Once the offer was made, Carey’s excitement was heightened as she put pen to paper on March 18 during a ceremony at the Mexico Sports Complex. The Mexico senior plans to study elementary education while participating in cheer and stunt.
Carey said Southwest Baptist has a highly regarded elementary education program, so it had already drawn her attention. She said the Southwest Baptist coach, Ashley Vest, texted her to invite her to a recruitment clinic late last year and then asked Carey two days later to be on the team.
“It made me really want the school even more,” Carey said. “I was a little bit uneasy because it was pretty expensive. I really wanted to keep cheering so it made me choose that one.”
Carey said she has cheered for three years at Mexico High School. As a freshman and junior, she cheered during basketball season. As a senior, Carey was on the football sidelines.
Her favorite part of cheering was the stunts and Carey said she also enjoyed doing all of the cheers. Carey’s love for the stunts does have a qualifier.
“I was on the ground and helped base,” Carey said with a laugh. “I liked throwing them up in the air. That was fun.”
Carey said she doesn’t plan on going airborne anytime soon but likes what’s waiting for her at the next level, including the campus, the gym and the cheer team.
“I was pretty excited,” Carey said with a smile. “There was a really good team there, and she is a really good coach. I am excited to go with her.”
