Centralia had the traits of the No. 1 seed on Monday.
The Lady Panthers were disciplined on defense and unselfish with 24 assists in a 74-18 win over Hallsville in the first round of the Centralia tournament, which they have won three straight years.
Head coach Megan Brinkmann said she was impressed by the amount of assists Centralia (4-0) had. It resulted in balanced scoring as Braylin Brunkhorst led with 17 points, Ealynne Bostick followed with 13 points, and Ryenn Gordon, Madilynn Hunter and Blakely Sowers each had 10 points.
“That’s unbelievable,” Brinkmann said. “You’re able to shoot that high when you’re that unselfish. That is such a bright spot of where we could go.”
Centralia scored the first 16 points of the game and only allowed one field goal in the first half. Hallsville (1-4) finished with five field goals.
Brinkmann said the Lady Panthers were disciplined on defense while working on different things, including using more pressure to “dictate what other teams do offensively.”
Most of the shots Hallsville took were ones it heaved over outstretched arms. Centralia’s defense didn’t provide many options.
“We want to make them take tough shots, and then we got a board out of it,” Brinkmann said.
Sowers and Hunter pulled in many rebounds off the bench as they finished with nine and seven rebounds, respectively. Brinkmann said the senior Hunter and freshman Sowers each bring a lot to the team.
“Madilynn has a nose for the ball,” Brinkmann said. “She’s always in there getting offensive rebounds and really working on putting those back and being strong.
“We’re just trying to get her in the groove of varsity a little bit as an incoming freshman with speed and physicality,” Brinkmann said about the freshman transfer Sowers. “For her to finish like she did tonight, it’s giving her some confidence to see the ball go through the hoop and she can do some good things.”
Centralia plays Clarence Cannon Conference foe Macon (3-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals.
