The record could not be extended into the Final Four.
The state No. 3 Centralia girls lost its Class 3 quarterfinal game on Saturday at state No. 2 Principia 47-41. The Lady Panthers’ season ended with a program record 28 wins to break the 27-2 record in 1978.
Centralia (28-2) trailed 19-16 at halftime and managed its best 17-point quarter in the third quarter, only for Principia (25-5) to outscore the team by one point. The Lady Panthers outshot Principia 38 percent to 33 percent and outrebounded on the defensive glass 27-16 but finished with 19 turnovers. Braylin Brunkhorst led Centralia with 15 points, Ryenn Gordon followed with 13 points and Madi Johnson had eight points.
“Obviously, we are disappointed not to make it back to the Final Four,” Brinkmann said. “We have a lot to be proud of for what we accomplished during our regular season. I thought we showed a lot of toughness and grit during our game on Saturday and battled until the very end.”
Centralia finished third in Class 3 a season ago but wasn't able to qualify for the Final Four this time against Principia, who was the runner-up in Class 2. The Lady Panthers won back-to-back district titles and Clarence Cannon Conference titles.
On Monday, Brunkhorst and Gordon were named co-Clarence Cannon Conference players of the year. The reigning all-state duo were each first-team all-conference players while Johnson and Ealynne Bostick were named to the second team. Brinkmann was selected as the conference coach of the year.
