Centralia girls sending three to state wrestling

Jayci Shelton will be going for a second straight state title this season.

Shelton was one of three Centralia girls to qualify for the Class 1 state tournament Feb. 26-27 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia after wrestling Friday and Saturday at the Class 1 District 2 tournament at St. Charles West in St. Louis. Ava Ward and Avery Adams will be joining her the first time.

In the 170-pound bracket, the Lady Panthers’ first ever state champion Shelton won by pinfall four times while only needing to go to the second period once in the championship match against Wright City’s Caelyn Hanff. Shelton won the 155-pound state bracket last season.

Ward won the 135-pound bracket after winning at the national and international level over the years. She pinned her first three opponents in the first period before pinning St. Charles West’s Payton Hammack in the second period.

Adams finished third at 100 pounds, with her lone loss in four matches being via pinfall to state-ranked Raylee King, of Brookfield. Other than that, Adams won by a 12-6 decision, a 15-0 technical fall and then an 8-5 decision over Marshall’s Genavieve Ceja for third.

All seven other Lady Panthers advanced to the second day of districts with Ana Bruce at 120 pounds, Karli Andersen at 130, Madie Shelton at 140 and Kyleigh Dollens at 155 each winning two matches and Audrianna Trujillo at 115 and Alyssa Bodine at 125 each winning one match. Shelton just missed state qualification after losing in the consolation semifinals by fall to Southern Boone’s Zafaran Satterfield.

Centralia finished fourth out of 33 schools with 118.5 points.

Giboney to return to state for North Callaway, Endres qualifies

Brooke Giboney will be going back to the state tournament for North Callaway.

Giboney finished third at 105 pounds in the Class 1 District 2 tournament at St. Charles West in St. Louis on Friday and Saturday while Elka Endres was fourth at 135 to also qualify for the Class 1 state meet on Feb. 26-27 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia. North Callaway sent both of its district wrestlers to state.

Giboney won four of her five matches, with two lasting until the third period, two going into the second period and all ending via pinfall. She was pinned in the third period by Hallsville’s eventual district runner-up Candance Calvert in the semifinals but eventually pinned Marshall’s Kendra Bellamy for third place.

Endres won four of six matches to earn her first state appearance, winning by pinfall three times and an 8-5 decision over St. Charles’ Morgan Simon in the consolation fifth round. She was pinned by St. Charles West’s Payton Hammack in the quarterfinals and was pinned by Mexico’s Abby Bowen in the third-place match.
