Centralia went into its Class 3 sectional on May 26 with its best season in recent memory.
A big reason why was the 10 runs per game averaged by the No. 3 Panthers and no shutouts allowed by the offense. Blake Kliethermes and defending state champion Fatima (18-12) handed Centralia (26-2) its first shutout of the season 2-0 in a sectional loss for the Panthers in Westphalia.
Kliethermes went into Tuesday as No. 9 Fatima’s workhorse with more 60 innings pitched and a 2.20 ERA in that span. He recorded 6⅔ innings with nine hits, eight strikeouts and two walks.
Grant Kendrick pitched five innings in the start for Centralia with six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. He allowed solo home runs to Jackson Crede and Tyler Bexten.
Oliver Bohlmeyer went 3-for-4 to lead the Centralia offense and was stranded at third base to end the game. Luke Waltemate finished 3-for-3, and Ian Arellano was 2-for-3.
Centralia’s best scoring chance happened in the fifth inning, where the first three Panthers reached base.
The Panthers were coming off their first district championship victory since 2004 with a 7-2 win on May 18 against North Callaway.
