Clock strikes midnight for Mexico football scrimmage

As soon as Aug. 15 rolled in, so did the Mexico Bulldogs.

The team held its annual midnight scrimmage in a full-padded intrasquad contact practice at Hawthorne Heights early Saturday. The Bulldogs worked on some things prior to playing their jamboree at 6 p.m. Friday night.

Head coach Steve Haag said there are many boys who played last year for Mexico, so he expects them to step up. There are also many new boys, so having everybody at this practice was helpful.

“We’re going to play a lot of young guys,” Haag said. “They’ll have a lot of snaps on a Friday night. We’ve got to get them ready to go.”

Haag said nobody was perfect, which is to be expected this early, but he saw good things as well. There were good running plays, and the quarterbacks did well.

“Some of these young guys, it’s important to do the right job,” Haag said. “Some of them are missing some of those assignments. We’ve got to get them cleaned up.”

Another thing to be expected at this stage is less stamina because Haag said that needs to be built up. He said a typical football game is between 120-140 snaps, and Mexico played 75 snaps in its midnight scrimmage.

The jamboree is nice to have every year before Week 1, but Haag said also doing this midnight scrimmage every year before that benefits the kids.

“You get to hit people, you get to tackle and you get to see live action,” Haag said. “All that stuff is great. You want to see who’s going to compete. We’re trying to build an offense with 11 players who are the best 11. It’s the same thing with defense. We didn’t have everybody in the summer, but now we do. Now we get to pencil in who we’re going into battle with in Week 1.”
