The Trojans have a young roster that struggled in their first two games of the season, losing 83-23 at Christian Fellowship on Friday and then 68-38 to Chamois on Saturday during the Gary Filbert Classic in Mexico.

Community trailed 21-17 after the first quarter and even led 11-10 about halfway through the quarter thanks to three 3-pointers. However, the game spiraled out of control for the Trojans the rest of the way. They fell behind 46-20 at halftime after scoring five combined points in the second and third quarters, and head coach Kody Asquith said those periods really hurt.

“We struggled on both ends of the floor,” Asquith said. “We couldn’t rebound the ball, and we wouldn’t shoot the ball well in the second and third quarters.”

Chamois outrebounded Community 42-19 in the game after holding a 26-5 advantage at halftime. Caleb Keilholz was one of several returning Pirates that defeated Community 64-29 last season and made an impact this time by earning the Gary Filbert Classic Player of the Game award with 17 points and three 3-pointers. Dawson Brandt returned this time with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Asquith said seeing the same faces on the opposing side made Chamois familiar. The Trojans knew their opponent was quick and could run the floor but knowing was half the battle.

“They outhustled us,” Asquith said. “They got more boards than us, and they move the ball well. We didn’t move the ball well. We had spurts where we moved the ball well. As a game, we didn;t move the ball as well as we should have.”

KaTavyn Wheeler led Community with 14 points and four 3-pointers and hit three of those in the first quarter. Caden Thomas had five of his 10 points in the first quarter. He knocked down a 3-pointer and so did sophomore Brett Beamer, but the freshman Wheeler, the sophomore Thomas and the rest of the Trojans’ offense didn’t start up again until the fourth quarter.

Asquith said his young roster isn’t meshing well as a unit, which is understandable since the season is only two games old. He pointed out Community only has one returning starter from last season, and that is the underclassman Thomas.

“We’re still trying to figure each other out,” Asquith said. “We’ve had several who have played together throughout the years, but it’s a different level of game for my freshmen. It’s a lot quicker than junior high basketball.”

Community R-6 hosts Van-Far at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
