The first quarter was too much to overcome for the Community R-6 boys on Tuesday night.
The Trojans didn’t score in the first quarter before eventually losing 54-35 to Central Activities Conference foe Sturgeon (4-2, 2-0 CAC). Community lost its third straight game after losing at conference foe Slater (5-4, 1-1 CAC) and on the road at Silex (3-2) within a week ago.
Head coach Chris Ellersieck said the slow start really hurt Community (3-5, 1-2 CAC), and there was too much to overcome.
“We had a hard time early rebounding, and we gave them second chance points,” Ellersieck said. “We got into some foul trouble in the first half. We had to play kids with two fouls, and they ended up getting three fouls. We played from behind all night long.”
Ellersieck said it was “a long night” after the Trojans turned the ball over too much and couldn’t hit the shots they were able to create. He said he saw the same struggles his young team had with pressure against Slater and Silex.
“We’re playing good teams that are highly competitive,” Ellersieck said. “We’re still figuring out how to play the game. That’s on me.”
Community did have one positive quarter when it outscored Sturgeon 12-10 in the third quarter. The Trojans tried to cut its deficit to lower than 15 points but couldn’t chip away any more despite being more active on the boards and seeing some shots fall from the perimeter.
“We played much better in the third quarter,” Ellersieck said. “We were trying to do everything we could to cut it to 10. I felt like if we could have cut it to 10 at the four-minute mark, we had a chance for a basketball game.”
Jude Curtis led with eight points, Caden Thomas had six points and Brett Beamer had six points on two 3-pointers. Curtis scored his points off the bench, and other Trojans received more playing time because of the aforementioned foul trouble.
Ellersieck said Layton Wright caught his eye because he played hard and with “a positive energy.”
Community has one more game before Christmas break and that is on the road at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Van-Far (2-3).
“We’ve got a really tough team in Van-Far,” Ellersieck said. “Hopefully, we can make that somewhat competitive and get to work over Christmas break to try and get better.”
