Community R-6 finds familiar territory in 25-2 win over Pilot Grove

Scoring more than 20 runs is a rare feat in softball.

For the Lady Trojans, there have been times in the past they had a day similar to the 25-2 three-inning victory on Tuesday at home over Central Activities Conference foe Pilot Grove. It was the largest margin of the victory for Community since a 24-0 win over Hermann on Sept. 3, 2020.

This year's Lady Trojans have quite a few freshmen and sophomores who have played for current head coach Jeff Angel. He said the Community junior high team scored almost that many runs in a game about a year ago.

"This is really good because Pilot Grove didn't have enough players to have junior varsity," Angel said. "We want to get our JV kids reps. Anytime we can get a big lead like this and get everybody involved in the game, that's even better."

Angel said Community has already had two or three JV games canceled this season. Having 34 batters come to the plate in the first two innings provided even the JV girls multiple at-bats.

Community finished with 20 hits and 12 girls with at least one RBI. Maci Poindexter went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Peyton Schafer finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, Jocelyn Curtis was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Myla Carroll, Chloe Johnson, Natali Sommer and Lydia Hoyt each had two RBIs.

Poindexter came out of Tuesday's game with a team-high 10 RBIs and is hitting north of .348 after 10 games in her freshman season. She said she has confidence that the offense can have a big day at any given day and is in the middle of it after being moved to the No. 3 spot about three games ago, according to Angel. He said Poindexter did hit No. 2 or 3 in the junior high lineup.

"We put a lot of effort in practice,"Poindexter said. "We have great coaches that will give us a lot of time to practice to work on things. You've got to work in practice, and you've got to do it at home."

Poindexter isn't a stranger to catching either as she caught in junior high as well. Angel said she has been behind the plate in every game they've asked her do so and has put in extra work in the offseason. He likes how she has settled into the position at the varsity level.

"You definitely have to put a lot of effort into it," Poindexter said. "You've got to want to do it and got to love to do it in order to be a varsity catcher as a freshman."

Angel said Community wanted a better offensive start after a slow day on Monday in an 11-1 loss in its conference opener at Glasgow. In the Lady Trojans' second at-bat, Lydia Hoyt bunted for a base hit and the line just moving.

"It is so good to get right back into it and get going again," Angel said. "To have a game like this and get the momentum back on our side is huge. You don't want to sit a couple days and stew on that loss."

Carroll struck out five and allowed four hits in three innings pitched. Angel said had a solid outing on Saturday when she allowed two earned runs on seven hits and three walks in a 6-3 loss to Marceline.

Community evened its conference record and seeks to maintain an undefeated record against Class 1 District 4 opponents. The Lady Trojans defeated Wellsville-Middletown 17-0 to start the season and beat Clopton 5-2 on Saturday but now turns their attention at a 5 p.m. Thursday game at Silex (2-5).

"We played them in the jamboree and they beat us 7-4," Angel said. "That was our first time we saw action since July 16 in South Callaway. We hadn't seen a whole of reps. We've seen their No. 1, and I feel really good about that. We weren't fine-tuned and we hung right there with them."
