The Community R-6 girls had a tough assignment with Joslyn Brown.

The Lady Trojans (8-2) defeated Brunswick (6-4) 45-37 on Monday in the first round of the New Franklin tournament.

Head coach Bob Curtis said Jocelyn Curtis did well to "cancel out what Brown had done offensively" by responding to one of Brown's buckets. Curtis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

"Joslyn Brown is one of the best post players in northwest Missouri standing at 6-foot-2, and Jocelyn Curtis had the tough assignment of trying to contain her," Curtis said. "I thought that Curtis did an excellent job of making Brown work for everything she got.  Jocelyn's effort and energy wore down Brown and they both had solid games."

Peyton Beamer followed with 12 points and nine assists, and passed the ball "beautifully" out of pressure. Kat Meyer had nine points and four rebounds, and Chloe Johnson had five points in her return from a knee injury.

"Against their zone, it was key that we had four different players connect from three to open up some scoring inside," Curtis said.

Community faces Central Activities Conference foe and No. 1 seed New Franklin (9-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
