The Community R-6 girls matched defense but couldn’t do the same with offense on Thursday.
For the second straight year, the Lady Trojans lost 48-34 to state No. 8 Higbee (22-7) in the Class 1 District 9 semifinals in Madison. After the team’s combined for one field goal in the first quarter and seven field goals in the first half, Higbee outscored Community 38-22 in the second half.
Community (17-11) was outscored 23-10 in the fourth quarter partly because of the big late performance from Ronnie Welch, who scored 17 of her game-high 22 points for Higbee in the second half. Peyton Beamer was the Lady Trojans’ leading scorer with 17 points and five 3-pointers, and senior Aaliyah Welch followed with seven points.
“We are proud of our 17-win season that saw us grind out a lot of close games,” head coach Bob Curtis said. “This group of girls really understand the recipe for success for us was to defend, win the war on the glass, and improve as the season went on at the line.
“Our seniors will be missed a lot. Aaliyah Welch really became a big-time scorer for us and leader in her final season in a Trojan uniform. Rylee Rafferty is a great passer and valued the basketball every possession. Amy McCurdy is a great rebounder, tough, and added depth to our team.”
