Community R-6 girls settling in as starters in summer

The Community R-6 girls starting five has looked different this summer.

In its third shootout of the summer, the Lady Trojans won two out of three games played at Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly on Thursday. They defeated Knob Noster’s junior varsity and Maysville.

Head coach Bob Curtis said Community R-6 has looked good so far despite having a new group of starters. Curtis said he expects to have only three upperclassmen during the season, so the young Lady Trojans have had opportunities this summer to play more minutes.

“We’re going to have some growing pains when you’re that young,” Curtis said. “At times, we’re going to start probably four or five sophomores and a junior or maybe one senior. You have that much youth on the floor, you’re going to have some really good possessions and some possessions where we’re like, ‘What are we thinking?’”

The double-digit win against Maysville to wrap up the day impressed Curtis. He said Class 2 Maysville finished second in its district last season and won 18 games with most of its starting lineup back.

Curtis said the girls have had great attendance early and have shown an eagerness to improve. He said the girls are excited to be playing more minutes this season and have put in the necessary work to do that.

“We ran a really good half-court offense,” Curtis said. “We got really good looks at the basket. They share the ball really well. This group is smart, and I think they’ll pick up on what we’re trying to do very quickly.”

Community hosts round robin games at 4 p.m. June 23 against Wellsville-Middletown and Madison.
