Community R-6 didn’t have its best day of golf at Heritage Hills in Moberly on Thursday.
No Trojan advanced past the Class 1 District 2 tournament in a field with 21 schools and over 100 golfers. Houston Hogan had the team’s best score of 114, or 44-over par, to finish in a tie for 80th.
Kaiden Erdel shot a 118 to finish 86th in his final meet, Ezra Johnson had a 120 to finish 89th, and Cooper Rohan had a 149 to take 99th in his final meet. Two weeks prior, Community finished second in the Central Activities Conference tournament at Heritage Hills.
“The boys are a little heartbroken because they shot a 369 as a team here during conference,” head coach Bob Curtis said. “It just wasn’t their day today.”
Curtis said, after the conference meet, that “Heritage Hills is a tough course with extremely fast greens and a lot of trouble if you get off the fairway.” Still, Erdel and Johnson earned all-conference honors after finishing with a sixth-place 88 and an eighth-place 90 out of 57 golfers. Three others finished in the top 20 that day, including Rohan with a 13th-place 93, Kyler Swaim with a 17th-place 98 and Caden Thomas with an 18th-place 99.
That was the highlight of Community’s second season as a golf program, Curtis said. The only team the Trojans didn’t beat that day was Glasgow and its 328. Glasgow won the district championship Thursday by 13 strokes with a 320.
Curtis said the number of golfers increased to 18 this year, and the hard work also increased. He said Erdel “came a long way” as the team’s lowest scorer for much of its meets and tournaments in his second year putting in a lot of work into golf. Braysen Glasgow was also in the team’s top five or six a lot after a busy summer.
“We had some people in the offseason put in some work,” Curtis said. “We went from 12 kids, which was a big team, a year ago to 18. Our kids are doing a nice job of trying to get their friends involved. We can only get more competitive. One through 10, we were very competitive with each other. The scores were very close, and they were pushing each other.”
