SPRING PREVIEW: Community R-6 to follow up return with improvement

Community R-6 didn’t have golf for almost a decade.

The school brought golf back last spring and will return this spring with 18 kids under head coach Bob Curtis.

“We had a lot of first timers make a lot of improvement by the end of the season and should be very competitive this spring as they have put the work in this summer,” Curtis said.

Community will have four seniors, including Cooper Rohan, Kaiden Erdel, Kyler Swaim and Grace Welch. Rohan spent most of last season as the team’s top golfer and looks good again this spring, Curtis said.

“Last year was just about learning about golf etiquette and how to become a competitive high school player putting in the work every day,” Curtis said. “Our team has nearly doubled and the competition for the top five spots is tight in the first week and a half.”

Curtis said there are golfers who can finish in the low 40s if they can avoid that one bad hole by hitting a hazard or hitting out of bounds with bad decisions.

“As a team this spring, our goal is to break 200 here in March meets, and hopefully by May, be shooting scores under 185 as a team,” Curtis said.
