Community R-6 felt like it beat itself on Monday.
In their second straight game at Mexico High School due to home wet field conditions, the Trojans hosted another Central Activities Conference foe Slater and had a polar-opposite result from Friday’s win against Madison. The Trojans lost 7-3 after allowing five unearned runs in the third inning.
Head coach Chris Ellersieck said Community (5-3, 1-1 CAC) certainly didn’t help itself in its first conference loss of the season. The Trojans finished with four errors, so Slater (3-2, 1-0 CAC) didn’t even need a hit to score its runs.
“Errors, baserunning mistakes and not being able to hit,” Ellersieck said. “The mistakes beat us.”
Community has to reset after encountering an inning like the third inning, Ellersieck said. Otherwise, Slater is able to win with only two hits.
“Just do the best that you can,” Ellersieck said. “Stay as positive as you possibly can. Move forward.”
Cooper Rohan struck out 10 hitters in 6⅔ innings while walking three, allowing two hits and being charged with two earned runs. Rohan was relieved by Kyler Swaim after he hit 110 pitches, and Swaim then ended the inning with a strikeout.
Ellersieck said Rohan did what he needed to do on the mound for a victory even though he joked that he didn’t have “his normal 14-strikeout game.” He just walked some hitters, which he knows Rohan tries to avoid.
“Cooper was just regular Cooper,” Ellersieck said. “He is going to throw strikes, and he’s going to strike kids out. We had a bad inning defensively, and it cost us.”
Ellersieck said Community needed more than the four hits it finished with to claw back in the game. Kaiden Erdel finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-RBI single with two outs in the first inning to give Community its only lead.
“He saw the ball well today and hit the ball hard to where they weren’t,” Ellersieck said. “It’s the key. He was able to do that while putting good wood on the ball and putting the ball in play.”
After the first conference loss, Ellersieck said it doesn’t get any easier in the conference with Cairo, New Franklin, Pilot Grove and Sturgeon on the schedule. The latter two received votes in the first Class 1 poll of the season.
“We need to focus a little bit differently,” Ellersieck said. “We just got to do better.”
