Community R-6 senior girls lead 77-37 win vs Bunceton

It was the perfect night for career- and season-bests.

The Community R-6 girls scored a season-high in a 77-37 win over Bunceton (6-13) on Monday at home. Kat Meyer — one of five seniors on Senior Night — led with a career-high 28 points on a career-best seven 3-pointers, and senior Peyton Beamer followed with 21 points, eight assists and eight steals.

Meyer and Beamer were glad to have an offensive explosion on such a special night, and they felt the Lady Trojans (11-9) showed their capability.

“I’m very confident in myself, and my teammates have that confidence in me,” Meyer said. “It makes me happy overall.”

“We shared the ball very well,” Beamer said. “I’m very proud of my team for putting up that much. I hope we can continue to score the ball as much as we can.”

Head coach Bob Curtis said Community dropped two of three games last week in the Sturgeon Tournament but against tough competition. The week ended in a 36-27 loss to Class 1 No. 10 New Franklin in the third-place game in a rematch of a 56-26 loss to Community’s Central Activities Conference rival.

Curtis said offense was tough to come by, but the Lady Trojans consistently played good defense. He said he was pleased to see his girls share the ball and involve each other so well.

“We shot the ball really well,” Curtis said. “Hopefully, it will jump start our offense. I always tell the girls we’re trying to get to 50 points because I think we can hold people under that.”

Meyer and Beamer said it feels good to have everybody clicking on the same night. Oftentimes, Beamer just had to find a way to get the ball to Meyer, who drained five 3-pointers in the third quarter.

“That basket was wide open tonight,” Meyer said with a laugh.

Curtis said it is “always a good memory” to have seniors score in double figures on Senior Night. His daughter, Jocelyn Curtis, joined Meyer and Beamer in that category with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Having his daughter as part of this senior class with Meyer, Beamer, Chloe Johnson and Adriana Woodson feels special, Curtis said, but he said they are all like his daughters. He said he’s known them since second grade and has been with them through Gus Macker, youth league and tournaments.

“We’ve spent a lot of time working on basketball and preparing for their high school career,” Curtis said. “It’s been a fun ride. Jocelyn and those other four girls mean a lot to me, and I will be really sad when they’re done.”

Curtis said Meyer had a finger injury about a week and half ago and is confident that her finger is feeling better.

“Most of them were in the second half,” Curtis said. “She came out of halftime there, and I was watching her as she was getting loose. It looked like she found it.”

Meyer and Beamer each had family play for Curtis as a Lady Trojan prior to their high school days. They each consider family to be important and will look back on their playing days fondly.

“I liked seeing my siblings play and getting to play with them,” Beamer said. “It means a lot to me, and playing for this program means a lot to me as well.”

Beamer said playing for such a great coach like Curtis has made being a Lady Trojan even better because he’s a “confidence-booster.” She said this has especially helped her deal with literal and figurative pressure as the point guard.

Meyer said Curtis has many good qualities that add up to him being a great coach.

“It’s been amazing,” Meyer said. “He’s a really good coach who is fun, but there are times when he’s going to be serious and you’ve got to take him seriously, too. He loves all of his players.”
