Community R-6 softball starts early this year

Community R-6 softball lost more than 20 games last season but had many freshmen in its ranks.

Those freshmen will be sophomores, and they have gained experience before the fall with some scrimmages this summer. After sweeping a doubleheader 10-1 and 11-1 earlier this summer at South Callaway, the Lady Trojans dropped a doubleheader at Mexico by margins of three runs or less.

Community has one more scrimmage date tonight at South Shelby before a few more practices to close its summer schedule. Head coach Jeff Angel said he has seen some improvement from his roster a year later, especially at the plate.

“Our goal this summer was to try really hard to concentrate on being better offensively,” Angel said. “Last year, we struggled at the plate with younger players. A lot of people have put work in, and we’re challenging kids to put the ball in play and cut down on our strikeouts.”

Angel said last year’s freshmen played way more games than what is typically expected. The Lady Trojans had 11 players last year to result in those girls playing more than 30 games.

Lydia Hoyt is set to be the team’s only senior this season, and there will be a few more underclassmen. After that is a majority of underclassmen on the roster of about 14 girls.

“A lot of freshmen don’t get to see 30-plus games,” Angel said. “That was a plus even though we took our knocks last year. We got better and learned from it.”

Angel said Alexis Schafer is an upcoming freshman pitcher who will add to the young talent pool of sophomores like Maci Poindexter and Natali Sommer. He said he likes how the Lady Trojans looked against live pitching and thinks they’ll do well in the fall.

“We’re going to be an exciting team to watch,” Angel said. “I think we will compete for the CAC title this year. I know that is saying a lot, but I think we will.”
