The Community R-6 girls racked up the strikeouts to finish their summer.
In the last softball scrimmages for the Lady Trojans, they struck 18 South Shelby hitters in a doubleheader sweep at Shelbina. Community won the first of the two five-inning games 11-0 and then won 13-6.
“I thought we played solid defense,” head coach Jeff Angel said. “I thought we did a really good job putting the ball in play, only striking out three times in two games.”
Alexis Schafer struck out 12 in five innings while tossing a no-hitter in the first game. Kaytlynn Arens and Myla Carroll each picked up three hits, and Maci Poindexter and Natali Sommer had two hits apiece. Schafer, Macy Woodside, Emma Morgan, Ana McLeod and Lydia Hoyt each collected one hit.
Carroll picked up the win in the second game by striking out six and allowing four hits in five innings. Carroll and Arens each finished 3-for-3, and Poindexter and Morgan picked up two hits apiece. Woodside, Hoyt, Schafer, McLeod, Nadia Sommer and Natali Sommer each had one hit while Sophie Fennewald drew two walks.
Angel said Community has two workouts this week and before taking a break until August 10. He said the Lady Trojans are excited to start the season after playing five scrimmages this summer.
