Community R-6 girls’ defense forces polar opposite night vs New Franklin in 37-29 win
Community R-6 performed vastly different against New Franklin this time.
The Lady Trojans cranked up the defense to defeat their Central Activities Conference foe 37-29 in their return to New Franklin (10-4, 2-2 CAC) after losing to the Lady Bulldogs 50-29 a week ago in the New Franklin Tournament. Community posted its ninth game with less than 30 points allowed.
“Our first meeting with them, they shot the ball extremely well with eight different people scoring,” head coach Bob Curtis said. “They shot the 3 well and got away from us. We came in with a different defense concept and executed it extremely well.”
Peyton Beamer led Community (12-3, 5-0 CAC) with 15 points and four assists. She scored all 15 of her points in the second half, hitting three 3-pointers and going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
“Peyton's play in the second half was really good,” Curtis said. “She saw the floor well getting her teammates involved and when they had to foul down the stretch to stop the clock she made her free throws.”
Jocelyn Curtis had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Kat Meyer had six points and was 3-for-3 at the line in the fourth quarter.
Community plays at Paris (10-6) at 6 p.m. tonight.
Community R-6 boys back in losing column in New Franklin
The Community R-6 boys broke a four-game losing streak in Madison earlier in the week but couldn’t follow up with a win.
The Trojans (3-11, 2-3 CAC) lost at Central Activities Conference foe New Franklin (10-4, 2-2 CAC) 68-20 on Friday after beating conference foe Madison for the second time of the year with a final score of 59-28 three days prior.
“We knew going into the game that New Franklin was a good and well-coached team,” head coach Kody Asquith said. “They are young — similar to us. We struggled with trying to get the ball in the hoop, a lot of in and out shots. We face them again in the first round of the Sturgeon Tournament, so we know what to expect and what we need to focus on going into the next game.”
Community plays at Paris (4-11) at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
