Allen scores 1,000 point in Trojans' 67-30 win vs Columbia Independent

Community R-6 senior Gavin Allen was starting district play with his team on Monday and wasn’t at 1,000 career points yet.

Allen doesn’t have to worry about that anymore as his team-high 23 points was enough to reach the milestone and lead the No. 3 seed Trojans to a 67-30 victory against No. 6 Columbia Independent (1-19) in the Class 1 District 10 tournament in Glasgow.

“I’m really happy for Gavin as he’s been wanting this for a while,” head coach Tad Shotten said. “I’ve been impressed by how quick of a learner he is in coaching him the last few years. To get this accomplished in three years is impressive and I’m certainly going to miss him next year.”

Mason Carroll scored 22 points and Tucker Robnett finished with 14 points to give the Trojans (14-13) two more double-digit scorers in the decisive victory.

Shotten said the team was a little sloppy in the first half but settled down in the second half. He said Community needs to be cleaner against No. 2 seed and Class 1 No. 5 Higbee (23-4), who defeated Madison 73-43 on Monday, at 7:30 p.m. today.

Weber becomes North Callaway all-time leading scorer in 71-40 district win vs New Bloomfield

North Callaway’s all-time scoring record has stood for about 50 years.

Matthew Weber made that number zero after scoring a game-high 32 points Monday in the No. 3 seed Thunderbirds’ 71-40 district victory against No. 6 New Bloomfield in the Class 3 District 7 Tournament at South Callaway in Mokane. The senior leading scorer needed 21 points to break the record that was set at 1,284 points by Mike Love, who played for North Callaway from 1972-75.

"I’m very proud of Matthew Weber with all the work he’s done to work on his shots his entire career,” head coach Matt Miller said. “The North Callaway record has been up there on the wall for quite a long time so he can definitely be proud of that.”

Weber, who scored his 1,000th career point after beginning this season injured, knocked three 3-pointers to be one of three Thunderbird double-digit scorers. Trenton Jones followed with 11 points and 18 rebounds, tying his career-high for boards in a game. Isiah Craighead had 11 points and five rebounds, and Braydn O’Neal finished with seven steals and five assists.

New Bloomfield (1-25) had three score eight points to lead the team, including Jake Fuhriman, Nathan Fuhriman and Andrew Fouch. The Wildcats were held to 13 points in the second half after North Callaway (14-12) had a 37-27 lead at halftime.

North Callaway plays No. 2 seed and Eastern Missouri Conference champion Montgomery County (19-7) at 7:30 p.m. today after facing the Wildcats twice this season — losing 51-48 and 57-45.

Missouri Military Academy improved season ends with 79-35 loss to South Callaway

South Callaway proved to be too much for Missouri Military Academy the first time around and was again to start district play on Monday.

The Colonels’ season ended after a 79-35 loss to South Callaway in the first round of the Class 3 District 7 tournament at South Callaway in Mokane, allowing 10 Bulldogs to score after having 15 3-pointers dropped against them in their previous 86-39 loss to South Callaway. Regardless, MMA finished the season with a 10-15 record, which is a four-win improvement from each of the prior two seasons.

Kellan Mugisha led No. 5 seed MMA with 14 points, and Albert Ogutu followed with five points. Tayber Gray led No. 4 South Callaway (14-12) with 20 points and was one of three Bulldogs in double figures.
