Eastern MO Y summer lunch program serves all kids 18 years and younger

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 22 million kids receive free or reduced-cost meals thanks to the National School Lunch Program. However, once the school year ends, only 17 percent of those same kids are able to access free meals over the summer break, leaving many children without during the summer months. The Eastern Missouri Family YMCA, Vandalia, is not just about providing meals, but also about creating a fun and engaging environment for our young participants. In addition to a nutritious lunch, kids will have the opportunity to play basketball and pickleball in the YMCA gym with their friends. The Y is also offering two free craft programs during the five-week lunch program. The program runs weekdays from June 24 through July 26 and is closed on July 4.

The volunteer-operated program is part of the Y’s year-round effort to address child hunger while providing a combination of learning activities and programs throughout the year. During the 2023 program, the Eastern Missouri Family YMCA served over 1,000 meals. Volunteers have prepared and served the meals each summer since the YMCA program began in 2019. The 2024 Summer Food Program begins June 24th in the Y Café, with weekday service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children may eat lunch at the YMCA or take their meals home. A parent must be present with the child to take meals home.

New this year, in addition to the regular lunch service from Monday through Friday, lunches will be distributed on Fridays from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday meals. The Summer Food Lunch Program is open to all families with children 18 years and younger, regardless of income. We believe that every child should have access to a nutritious meal, and we invite you to join us at the Y during serving hours, provide your name, and enjoy a healthy lunch.

“Hunger has a lasting impact on the development of children,” says Debbie Hopke, branch director. “Giving kids access to nutrition-filled meals allows kids to focus, learn, and become empowered to reach their full potential. The Y’s Summer Food Program helps ensure kids enjoy healthy and delicious meals and snacks all summer.” Call or stop by to learn more about your local YMCA’s Summer Food Program.
