On Sunday, Oct. 22, at approximately 7:12 p.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) responded to the U.S. Highway 54 bypass, about one mile from East Liberty Street, in reference to a crash. Responding personnel found that a 2016 Dodge was being driven northbound by Kelly B. Rolando, age 34 of Pleasant Hill, IL, when it crossed the centerline and struck a 2022 Tesla being driven southbound by Jeffrey M. Jappa, age 62 of St. Louis. Both Rolando and Jappa died as a result of the crash. A front-seat passenger in the Tesla, Cheryl A. Pro, age 63 of St. Louis, was transported to University Hospital by ambulance where she was admitted for care. The bypass was closed for approximately 2.5 hours.
