Five Mexico boys earn soccer postseason awards

The Mexico boys soccer program has some good talent graduating this year.

Of the five Bulldogs recognized with postseason awards, four were seniors for Mexico’s 6-16-2 team this season. Leading the honorees were all-North Central Missouri Conference second-team members senior goalkeeper Emille Scanavino and senior midfielder Brendan McKeown, and those that earned all-district honors were junior Gage Walker on the first team, senior defender Jibran Rodriguez on the second team and senior defender Jacob Hernandez as an honorable mention.

Scanavino closed a historic career in goal for Mexico after making the all-conference team a season ago. Last year, had the 19th-most saves in a season with 214, according to MSHSAA records, following his 18th-most 238 during his sophomore year. As a senior, Scanavino stopped 170 saves to top out his career total at 622 for the sixth-best career mark in state history. He was also able to score a goal near the end of the season.

McKeown made the all-conference team following an all-district season. This year, he led the Bulldogs with nine goals and had an assist to add to his career totals of 16 goals and three assists.

Walker had the second-most goals for Mexico with eight goals and led with five assists, Rodriguez blocked 25 goals to follow-up an all-district season last year, and Hernandez was a “great defender” as captain to Mexico’s defense, head coach Bill Gleeson said.

Gleeson added there are several other seniors he wish the program had longer like Bryce Carter, who had two career goals and two assists; Sebastian Mena, who had two goals this season; Jaylen Johnson, whose “speed and experience on the back line” will be missed; and Jorge Hernandez, who is a “good defender” whose experience will also be missed.

Jesus Garcia will be among the Bulldogs returning along with Walker as Garcia had the third-most goals with six goals and added two assists. Grant Walker played much defense this year, but Gleeson expects him to be Mexico’s goalkeeper next year, Marcos Matuz and Jace DeVault will bring defensive experience to next season, Nathan Rodriguez has “versatility,” and Alex Rodriguez’s “ball handling skills” will be used.
