While state couldn’t be reached, a Mexico doubles pair earned some recognition at the end of the season.

Seniors Claire Hudson and Lucy Gleeson finished third on Friday and Saturday at the Class 1 District 4 individual tournament at Hannibal. The pair missed state qualification triggered for either earning first or second place.

“This was the first year of the new district format,” head coach Kim Costley said. “Class 1 now has nine or 10 teams per district, with 18 singles and 18 doubles entries, and the first and second place finishers go directly to the state tournament. The tournament lasted two days.”

Hudson and Gleeson defeated Kirksville’s Gardner and Snyder 6-3, 6-0 and then Holt’s Seabaugh and Talley 6-4, 6-3 but lost a competitive match to Hannibal’s pair of Sutton and Lee 6-0, 4-6 and 10-12.

The other Mexico doubles pair Lea Hernandez and Yolitza Rodriguez-Rios won their first match against Holt’s Edstrom and Kiehl 6-4, 1-6 and 10-5 but lost to Hannibal’s Hickman and Lemon 4-6, 3-6. In singles, Jyllian Whitworth lost to Lutheran St. Charles’ Williams 6-3, 6-0 and Reiley Walker defeated Lutheran St. Charles’ Wiegard 6-3, 6-4 and lost to Palmyra’s Gottman 6-0, 6-0.

Mexico goes down 5-4 to Palmyra after fight in team districts

Mexico fought for every point on Tuesday.

It wasn't enough for the Lady Bulldogs as they lost 5-4 to Palmyra in team districts, bringing their season to an end at a record of 7-12. Mexico won three singles and one doubles match, with two singles matches being decided by tiebreakers.

"I was proud of the girls as they came to play and battled throughout every match," head coach Kim Costley said. "The scores were very close and the games could have gone either way. We had a lot of tight matches and won two out of the three tiebreakers. This group has grown tremendously and the seniors will be missed. We wish them all the best."

Senior Lucy Gleeson won a tiebreaker in her singles match 2-6, 6-0 (10-6), and senior Claire Hudson won a tiebreaker in her singles match 4-6, 6-1, (10-5). Yolitza Rodriguez-Rios was the other singles winner at 6-2, 6-2.

Rodriguez and senior Melanie Hernandez-Jarquin won their doubles match 9-7, seniors Jyllian Whitworth and Reiley Walker were involved in the dual's other tiebreaker, losing 8-9, (5-7).
