Griggs wins in home finale, Centralia girls prepare for districts after duals

It was a slow night for the Centralia girls.

It wasn’t because the Lady Panthers struggled on Feb. 3 at home but due to there being only two matches in their tri meet against Chillicothe and Fulton. Fulton didn’t have its girls available that night so Centralia wrestled twice against Chillicothe, winning the dual 27-18.

Avery Griggs wrestled Hadley Ramsey to a tie at 9 at the end of regulation but picked up the takedown to secure the 12-9 sudden victory. The 110-pound freshman is looking good at the right time, head coach Mike Adkisson said, with districts happening Feb. 13-14 in Mexico.

“We’re starting to see gains from her, especially on her feet and takedowns,” Adkisson said. “She’s been really successful on her feet the last couple weeks. That’s why in that overtime, we were confident that we were going to get that. She’s very confident on her feet, and knowing she’s confident makes her confident.”

Adkisson said Griggs has years of wrestling experience prior to entering the program as she started in youth club when she was “a small one.” He said she will be ready to compete at districts and foresees other girls doing the same after good seasons.

Avery Adams is “making big jumps weekly” after earning various medals as the team’s 100-pounder, Adkisson said. Triztyn Tinker has “big wins” at 190 pounds this season, and Adkisson sees the aforementioned girls standing out with other girls on the bubble.

“You look for the jumps they make during the season,” Adkisson said. “You gauge that off the competition you see them on the mat with.”

The Lady Panthers should have health on their side after a rough stretch involving three or four girls going through sickness. Adkisson said there are a couple injuries from which girls are recovering.

Along with the lineup being more “solidified,” he hopes having districts in Mexico will help the girls feel comfortable.

“We’re really excited to be that close to home,” Adkisson said. “Getting to sleep in our beds makes a big difference. You don’t have to travel or be in a hotel and you get to eat food from home. All that stuff makes a big difference in just how the girls feel when they get there. It’s a relaxing feeling, and that’s where you want them to be.”
