Two men from Florida who reportedly stole items from vehicles in Mexico crashed a rented vehicle Sunday in Montgomery City. One was arrested in Warrenton, while the other suspect is still at large. The vehicle had a reported stolen license plate from Perryville.

Mexico Department of Public Safety received reports Sunday afternoon relating to thefts from vehicles in the area of Adams Street. Officers learned that Brandon Malik Beason, 24, of Lauderbill, Florida, and Martavius Breyon Corker-Tukes, 25, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were in a gold Cadillac and allegedly stole three purses from vehicles after reportedly breaking the car windows, according to a news release.

A Wellsville police officer reportedly saw the Cadillac at about 2:13 p.m. Sunday on Missouri Highway 19 at Washington Street with only a rear Missouri license plate. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which was driving 50 mph in a 25 mph zone, according to court documents.

Beason was driving the car and the officer had to speed up to 100 mph. The officer lost sight of the Cadillac near Montgomery City, but later found it at the intersection of Highway 19 and East Second Street where it had reportedly struck a 2003 Ford F150. An Ameren UE utility pole and the David Dowling Law Firm also were damaged. The license plate on the Cadillac was reportedly stolen from the vehicle of a Perryville resident, but who was in Cape Girardeau at the time of the theft. The vehicle was rented from Hertz.

Beason and Corker-Tukes had reportedly fled on foot. A Show-Me Credit Union debit card and a cellphone belonging to Beason were found at the crash scene. Other evidence — credit cards, social security cards and checks from the Mexico vehicles — was located in the dumpster of a restaurant just south of the crash location, according court documents.

Beason requested a ride from a Montgomery City resident to the Warrenton Walmart. He was found at the Walmart at about 6 p.m. He was reportedly attempting to purchase warm clothing and a new cellphone.

He was arrested and transported back to the Montgomery County Jail. He was charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage exceeding $1,000.

Authorities are still searching for Corker-Tukes, who was last seen wearing a red hoodie, according to court documents.
