The Mexico girls got to play on their home courts in the postseason.
After playing their first season on the new courts at Mexico High School, the Class 1 District 4 tournament was hosted on Oct. 8 in Mexico. Singles were played on the high school courts and doubles were played at Fairgrounds Park.
Mexico didn’t send anybody through to state. Jackie Medina-Lucas lost singles to Moberly 6-0, 6-4 and Abbey Christianson lost singles to Kirksville 1-6, 7-5 and 9-11.
Erika Pech Cordova and Chelsea Gifford won their first doubles match against Duchesne 6-1, 6-1 but then lost to Boonville 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Tesla Ingram and J’Zaira Fountain lost doubles to Lutheran St. Charles 6-2, 6-0.
“Our district had 10 teams this year, so there were 20 doubles teams and 20 singles teams competing to advance to state,” head coach Kim Costley said. “We’ve grown tremendously this season, but we didn’t pull out many wins against seasoned players.”
Mexico (3-11) lost in team districts on Monday at home 5-2 against Duchesne (3-12). Medina-Lucas won her singles match 4-6, 6-3, 15-13 and also won doubles with Christianson 8-6. Gifford won singles 6-2, 6-2.
“This was a very competitive matchup,” Costley said. “Many matches went to tiebreaks and could have gone either way. The match started very challenging with the fiercest wind we've faced this year. Jackie Medina-Lucas ended her year with a win in both doubles and singles. It's tough playing that top spot, but she has been challenged all year and has grown both as a tennis player and as a young lady. J'Zaira Fountain was a first year senior and found herself in the varsity lineup for most of the year. I'm so proud of how she carries herself with such poise and integrity, even when facing challenges. We will miss her senior leadership.”
