Before the Thanksgiving holiday, Mexico girls wrestling dug into the season.
Returning state runner-up Alexus Johns finished in the top 3 in each of her first tournaments, including as a winner at a tournament in Wright City on Nov. 23. On junior varsity, Jazzmin Torres became the first Lady Bulldog in program history to medal at the Rookie Wonder Woman tournament with a fourth-place medal on Nov. 23.
Johns won all four of her matches in the Wright City tournament by pinfall — three within the first minute and one in the second period. Abby Bowen won three of her four matches to finish third at 140 pounds, pinning three in the first period and being pinned by Osage’s Caitlyn Sullivan late in the second period.
At the Versailles Invitational on Nov. 26, Johns finished third amongst a loaded field that included the top four 235-pound finishers at the previous state tournament. She pinned Marshall’s Taylor Sullivan and Eldon’s Jayda Stephen each in the first period before losing 8-1 to reigning third-place wrestler Loghan Sumner and beating reigning fourth-place girl Sherlyn Solano, of Marshall, via 2-0 decision.
Torres won her first two matches at the Rookie Wonder Woman in the 170-pound bracket, winning by first-period pinfall and third-period pinfall. She then was pinned in each of her final two matches.
