Large field for open board seat

The deadline to file for the open seat on the Mexico Public Schools Board of Education has come with a wide field of candidates to choose from.

Five people: Heather DeMint, Lennette Brown, Erik Richardson, Michelle Stephens, and Matthew Robnett, all filed by the deadline on Tuesday, July 18 by 4:30 p.m. An opening on the board happened last month when Marci Orr stepped down to take a position within the district as the communications director. Four of the five candidates signed up in the last 36 hours before the deadline.

The person chosen will finish the remainder of Orr’s term which is set to expire next April. At that time the person chosen can choose to file for the election. The board will choose the next member by a vote in open session. The board may choose to interview candidates one on one or not at all.

Two of the names on the list, Erik Richardson and Michelle Stephens, both appeared on the local ballot this past April. Richardson ran for an open seat on the Mexico city council and finished in third place out of a field of five candidates with 354 votes with the top two moving on to be seated. Stephens ran for one of three open school board seats and finished fifth in the eight-person field with 650 votes.

The board usually meets on the third Tuesday of the month which would have been this past week, however, that meeting has been pushed back to this Tuesday, July 25. The board could take action on the open seat but that is not for certain. There is a line item on the board’s agenda to discuss the opening.
