Mexico baseball played more than 30 games this season.

A group of Bulldogs had important roles in those victories, as shown by the postseason awards they received, and will be back next year. Sophomore Drew DeMint made the North Central Missouri Conference team as an outfielder and was named to the all-district team in Class 4 District 8 along with juniors Sam Ryan, Jaydon Eldridge and Austin Maxwell and sophomore Brady Fox.

“If it was raining, snowing or blustering winds, we would always be scheduled for a game that night,” head coach Daniel McCarty said. “This team rose to every occasion they faced without a complaint on the weather. We finished out the season with 15 wins and 17 losses. We lost 12 games by two runs or less. We had chances in every game to get the tie or take the lead. We were always searching for the big hit in those games this year.”

DeMint had a .320 batting average in conference play and had nine stolen bases and 38 putouts in the outfield. He posted a .320 batting average in district play and finished with 31 hits on the season, a .960 fielding percentage in center field and two home runs.

Leading the pitching staff this season was Fox and his 2.00 ERA, 48 strikeouts, four wins and 18 earned runs allowed in 62⅔ innings and Ryan along with his 1.20 ERA, 45 strikeouts, five wins and 11 earned runs allowed in 60 innings. Ryan only allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings in Mexico’s season-ending 1-0 loss to Father Tolton in the district semifinals.

“Our pitching rotation was the biggest backbone of our team,” McCarty said. “In the 209 innings we pitched, our guys spun a team ERA of 2.60. This is stellar in high school baseball. We are returning all of our pitchers next season.”

At first base, Eldridge had a .310 batting average in District play, 23 hits on the season and a .985 fielding percentage at first.

Maxwell owned a .280 batting average in District play, 22 hits on the season and 2 Wins in 34⅔ innings pitched.

“This offseason, as a whole, we are going to simplify things down in our hitting mechanics and how we approach the plate mind frame,” McCarty said. “We are returning all 27 players next year and are going to be welcoming a large group of talented incoming freshmen. I am excited to see how this young group works together when competing.”
