Bulldogs lose 88-79 at Moberly, rebounds with 71-65 vs Brown County
After a busy offensive night, the Mexico boys had to go right into the next game.
The Bulldogs lost 88-79 at Moberly on Friday for their first North Central Missouri Conference loss and then defeated Brown County (Illinois) in the Superfan Shootout in Quincy on Saturday.
Class 4 No. 7 Mexico (15-6, 5-1 NCMC) scored a season-high against Moberly (14-7, 4-2 NCMC) but also allowed a season-high. The Bulldogs hit nine 3-pointers while Moberly had seven 3-pointers, and Moberly went 27-for-36 at the free-throw line while Mexico finished 6-for-8. The personal foul count was 27 for Mexico and 11 for Moberly.
Charlie Fisher led with 26 points, six rebounds, four assists and three 3-pointers. Kaden Benne followed with 25 points, five 3-pointers and four assists, Kinser Groves had 11 points and six rebounds.
Fisher had another good game against Brown County with 20 points and five assists to earn the player of the game award. Benne finished with 20 points, five assists and four 3-pointers, James Matthews had 13 points and four assists, and Groves had eight points and three steals.
The Bulldogs had seven 3-pointers and went 18-for-22 at the free-throw line compared to 9-for-17 for Brown County.
Mexico plays at School of the Osage (13-6) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Lady Bulldogs come back to win at Moberly, lose in Quincy
The starts for the Mexico girls were different on Friday and Saturday, and the results were different, too.
The Lady Bulldogs won 65-53 at North Central Missouri Conference foe Moberly (10-11, 4-2 NCMC) on Friday despite trailing by nine points at halftime. They lost 76-67 to Camp Point Central (Illinois) on Saturday in the Superfan Shootout in Quincy.
Head coach Makenzie Mudd said Mexico’s start against Moberly was slow, but Mexico (10-10, 4-2 NCMC) was able to outscore Moberly 40-19 in the second half.
“We came out with a lot more energy in the third quarter and carried that through the end of the game,” Mudd said. “We were able to force some key turnovers.”
Grace Hudson led with 20 points, Alyssa Miller followed with 19 points and six rebounds, and Scottie Smith had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.
Mudd said the start was better against Camp Point Central for the 9:30 a.m. game, but there were too many defensive lapses.
“The scoring was back-and-forth for most of the game,” Mudd said. “They had 11 made 3-pointers in the game, and that was the key part that hurt us in the end.”
Hudson led again with 21 points and five assists, Smith finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Miller had 11 points and four assists.
Mexico hosts Capital City (3-18) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the middle school.
