The Mexico boys had a shot at No. 1 on Friday.
The Bulldogs lost 66-55 to Class 3 No. 1 Principia on Friday in the semifinals of the Rolla Boys Holiday Tournament after the undefeated Panthers (9-0) outscored Mexico 24-16 in the fourth quarter. Mexico (6-4), who received votes in the Class 4 state poll, was only down three points after the second and third quarters. Kaden Benne led Mexico with 17 points and four 3-pointers, Jaydon Eldridge followed with 13 points and two 3-pointers, Charlie Fisher had nine points and two 3-pointers and PJ Perkins added eight points.
"Principia's pressure in the fourth quarter resulted in some costly turnovers, and they turned them into transition buckets," head coach Darren Pappas said. "We also got hurt on the glass late, which gave them too many opportunities on the offensive end, and they made them count."
Pappas said he was "pleased with our overall effort" against a top-ranked team, but the Bulldogs now focus on the third-place game at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
