Mexico basketball had opposite results and seasons against North Central Missouri Conference foe Kirksville.
On Friday in Kirksville, the Bulldogs beat the Tigers (10-6, 3-2 NCMC) for the second time this season 66-48 while the Lady Bulldogs lost to the Lady Tigers (8-7, 4-1 NCMC) for the second time 67-61.
Jaydon Eldridge led the Mexico boys and the floor with 17 points in their win along with six rebounds, PJ Perkins and Kaden Benne each followed with 14 points, and Charlie Fisher had 10 points. Perkins led with nine rebounds. The Bulldogs (10-5, 4-0 NCMC) beat their conference and district foe 55-38 in Mexico earlier this season.
“We cranked up our defensive intensity in the second half, which resulted in some stops and our transition offense took over,” head coach Darren Pappas said about outscoring Kirksville 33-18 in the second half. “We got some good production from our bench, and we had some timely perimeter shots go in.”
Claire Hudson led the girls with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Scottie Smith followed with a career-high 19 points along with eight rebounds and five assists, and Alyssa Miller had 12 points and five steals. The Lady Bulldogs (8-7, 2-2 NCMC) lost 52-49 to their conference and district foe in Mexico earlier this season.
“We came into this game missing three players who have gotten a lot of minutes this season,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “We were hit with injuries and illness this week that requires us to adjust our roles on the team. We only had seven players play, and they fought hard until the very end.”
