Through five innings, Mexico looked like it would be playing in a district championship game.
The Lady Bulldogs took a 7-2 lead but then allowed state No. 10 St. Dominic to tie the game in the sixth inning before eventually losing 9-8 in nine innings in the Class 4 District 5 tournament semifinals in Hannibal. Mexico (15-15) retook the lead in the ninth inning on a Payton Shaw double, but St. Dominic (18-6) followed with three singles to tie the game and then walked off on an infield error in the bottom half of the inning.
Shaw finished 2-for-5, and Maddy Feger was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Other Mexico hitters really made their lone hits count as Hannah Loyd finished 1-for-5 but had two RBI, Alyssa Miller was 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Kenley Jones was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Mexico led 7-0 after scoring six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple by Miller and a two-RBI triple by Loyd. Kenley Jones hit a RBI double to score the game's first run in the second inning.
St. Dominic managed to tie the game five runs in the sixth inning after having its first two batters retired. Four hits and three walks happened during the two-out rally.
Keerstan Ewing bounced back from her first district outing on Thursday when she didn't pitch past the first inning and turned in 6 2/3 innings on Saturday. Ewing allowed two earned runs on nine hits and had no walks.
Mexico finishes with one less win than last season's 16-12 in what was the team's first foray in Class 4 after moving up a class this season. This meeting with St. Dominic was the program's first since its 2018 Class 3 state championship season.
