North Callaway faced star Centralia pitcher Jaylynn Brown again on Saturday but for the full seven innings this time.
The Ladybirds struck out eight times in four innings to Brown in a 12-2 loss at home almost two weeks ago. This time, in the Class 3 District 4 semifinals at Southern Boone in Ashland, Brown struck out a school-record 19 and allowed two walks and one hit in a 3-0 loss for North Callaway (21-13).
"She was hitting all her spots, throwing hard, throwing good changeups," head coach Mariah McKee said. "We made her work. There was a lot of five- six- and seven-pitch outs. The girls never quit. They were shouting from the dugout until the last out of the game."
Brown threw 120 pitches for state No. 1 Centralia (26-3) while Megan Schmidt threw 90 pitches for North Callaway. Megan Schmidt led off the game with a single but was forced to pitch from behind all game. Still, Schmidt only allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings.
North Callaway finished the season with its most wins since 25 victories earned during its state runner-up season in 2007.
