Mexico girls basketball ended the old year against new competition.
The Lady Bulldogs faced three opponents for the first time from Dec. 29-31 at the Windsor (Imperial) Tournament. They lost 57-51 to St. Clair in overtime and beat Charleston 56-53 and Windsor 49-32 for Mexico to move to 5-6.
“It was a good week of basketball for us against new competition,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “We could have gone 3-0 on the week, but the first game got away from us in overtime. We were able to put together a lot of good things on offense in each game and got good experience against a variety of defenses. We had far too many turnovers and defensive lapses that we need to improve on as we head into the rest of the season.”
Payton Shaw was named to the all-tournament team.
In the loss to St. Clair (3-0), who received votes in the first Class 4 state poll, Alyssa Miller and Grace Hudson each led Mexico with 16 points. Hudson finished with seven steals, and Miller had four steals.
Against Class 2 Charleston (6-4), Hudson led with 18 points and four steals. Scottie Smith finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and Miller had 11 points and five rebounds.
Against Class 5 Windsor (5-4), Smith led with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, and Hudson had 12 points and four assists.
The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 5-7 after losing 69-47 at Class 6 Battle (3-5) on Friday in the Spartan Invitational at Battle High School in Columbia.
“We had a lot of good moments but couldn’t put together a lot of fundamental things to gain a lead,” Mudd said.
