Fortunately, the Mexico girls didn’t need overtime like the boys from earlier Sunday morning as the Lady Bulldogs notched their second straight comeback victory.
After going into the fourth quarter down 21-20, Mexico won its 48 Hours of Basketball Springfield game at noon Sunday against Class 5 Hillcrest 29-28 at Greenwood Laboratory School in Springfield.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-4) didn’t take their first lead until one minute deep into the fourth quarter but didn’t let loose of that slim lead the rest of the way.
Claire Hudson had another team-high performance with nine points and seven rebounds to be named the MVP, Jo Thurman followed with seven points and four rebounds, and Messiah Simpson and Kierstan Epperson each pulled down five rebounds. Lexie Willer had four rebounds and three assists.
Head coach Ed Costley said Mexico had its opportunities to increase its lead against Hillcrest (3-6) in the fourth quarter only to finish 1-for-6 at the free throw line in the final eight minutes and 4-for-12 for the game.
Mexico (1-0 NCMC) played its home opener Tuesday night against Kirksville (1-3, 0-1 NCMC).
