After starting the season with two shutout losses at Marshall (2-3) and Capital City (3-0), Mexico girls tennis picked up its first win among more competitive duals.
The Lady Bulldogs beat Battle (0-4) 8-1 on Wednesday in Mexico's home opener. They lost 8-1 at conference foe Hannibal (5-0) on Tuesday and lost 5-4 to conference and Class 1 District 4 foe Kirksville (3-2) at home on Thursday.
Against Battle, No. 1 Lea Hernandez-Sanchez won her singles match 8-1, No. 2 Yolitza Rodriguez-Rios won 8-2, No. 3 Marali Herrera-Amaya won 8-0, No. 4 Bailey Christianson won 8-2 and No. 6 Jackie Medina-Lucas won 8-1. In doubles, No. 1 pair Hernandez-Sanchez and Rodriguez-Rios won 8-1, No. 2 Herrera-Amaya and Christianson won 8-0, and No. 3 Medina-Lucas and Kayden Higbee won 8-4.
"The doubles teams are starting to communicate more as they transition to a higher level of play," head coach Kim Costley said. "Lea Hernandez-Sanchez took control of her match after a 2-1 lead and finished 8-1 with smart play from the baseline."
In Mexico's loss at Hannibal, Herrera-Amaya and Christianson won doubles 9-7. Medina-Lucas had the closest singles loss 8-6.
"Hannibal is probably the strongest team in the conference right now," Costley said. "We didn't get any singles today, but we have many girls that have not played singles. They are learning how to compete at the varsity level and how to play by themselves. We are growing every match and that's important."
In the loss against Kirksville, Rodriguez-Rios won in singles 8-1, Christianson won 9-8 (7-4) and Medina-Lucas won 8-5. Herrera-Amaya had a close loss at 9-8 (7-5). In doubles, Herrera-Amaya and Christianson won 8-4.
"We had a great match against Kirksville and it came down to the wire," Costley said. "This group has grown so much over the past two weeks. When we walk onto the court there is a purpose. Bailey Christianson came from behind and stole the win in a tie-break. Jackie Medina-Lucas continues to improve. She worked all summer so it is great to see her reap the benefits of her hard work."
Mexico hosts School of the Osage (4-1) at 4 p.m. Monday.
