The Mexico girls wore their Pink Out shirts to benefit the Kris Fecht Scholarship Fund during pregame warmups on Friday at Mexico Middle School and then beat Class 5 Capital City 59-29. It was the first win for Mexico (12-10) over Capital City (3-20) since 2022.

On the same night Mexico girls wrestling hosted the first night of districts at the high school, the Lady Bulldogs had a slow start but didn’t give Capital City much room to breathe after figuring it out.

“We were trying to find out rhythm,” head coach Makenzie Mudd said. “We did a really good job, second quarter on, of moving the ball. I’m excited to see our assists after we get the stats back because I feel like we had a lot more assists this game. We passed up on OK shots for really good shots and finished a lot more on our layups than the past few games.”

Alyssa Miller led Mexico with 20 points and seven rebounds, Grace Hudson followed with 18 points, three steals and three 3-pointers and Scottie Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Miller shot and made four free throws in the first quarter, earning trips to the line after pushing the ball to the rim. Capital City was even on the scoreboard with Mexico early in the first quarter after repeatedly picking up offensive rebounds off its misses at the line. Finally, Miller grabbed a miss and took it to the other end, which was before Mexico started making a run to close the first quarter ahead 22-13.

“It was a good turning point,” Miller said. “We got a good run off of it once we rebounded the ball. It was a little slow at first, but we got it under control.”

Capital City couldn’t make a dent in that lead as it only had eight combined points in the second and third quarters. Mexico didn’t allow them to make a single field goal in the second quarter.

Mudd called a timeout in the first quarter after Lily Coates, who led Capital City with 12 points, hit a 3-pointer. She wanted to ensure the girls heard her message, and that appeared to be the case on defense.

“We were not moving our feet well enough on defense,” Mudd said. “I didn’t like how open we were leaving them to attack. That’s what we talked about in that first timeout. ‘Move your feet and stop the ball first.’”

Mudd said Mexico has to have “defensive energy” lead into the offense to be successful, and that was the case on Friday.

Miller said the pressure was literally on Capital City to respond to Mexico’s run at the end of the first quarter.

“We put a lot of pressure on them,” Miller said. “We worked as a team really well. We got a lot of good ball movement.”

Miller can knock down 3-pointers and had one go down against Capital City. She can get on a roll that has her hitting multiple shots from outside, but the points were at the rim for Miller in this game.

“Attacking the paint was there,” Mudd said. “She did a really good job of rolling on some screens and being open for people to get her the ball. Alyssa does a good job of rolling open into the lane, and she really capitalized on that tonight.”

Mexico had four 3-pointers because it was able to rely on passing to the interior. Miller said the practice paid off on Pink Out night.

“In practice, we’ve been working on paint touches and kicking it out,” Miller said. “If you're open, take the ball. If you’re not, swing it out to the 3-point line.”
