The Mexico girls tennis team kept its season alive by at least another day.
The Lady Bulldogs won 5-0 against North Central Missouri Conference rival Fulton in the first round of the Class 1 District 4 team tournament at Fairgrounds Netplex in Mexico. Their 13th straight victory over Fulton (0-11) earned the team a dual against No. 1 seed Columbia Independent (9-3) on Tuesday in Columbia.
Mexico (3-9) advanced past its first district dual for the first time in three years and started by sweeping the three doubles matches. Lea Hernandez-Sanchez and Yolitza Rodriguez-Rios won at No. 1 doubles 8-2, Bailey Christianson and Marali Herrera-Amaya won at No. 2 doubles 8-1 and Kayden Higbee and Jackie Medina-Lucas won at No. 3 doubles 8-2.
Herrera-Amaya won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Medina-Lucas won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to win the necessary points for Mexico. All of the other Lady Bulldogs were leading their singles matches when play was stopped.
Mexico had played Fulton frequently as of late because of the regular season finale at Fulton, the conference tournament, and individual and team district play. Despite everybody being eliminated in individual districts Friday at Holt, head coach Kim Costley said the girls played well then and did so again on Monday.
“This is the third time many of the girls have played Fulton in three weeks, and it is tough to play the same person so many times in such a short time frame,” Costley said. “The girls came out focused and determined.”
Hernandez-Sanchez and Rodriguez-Rios each won their first individual district singles match against Fulton opponents before losing in the next round. Herrera-Amaya and Christianson won their first doubles match 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) against Boonville before losing in the next round to Holt 7-5, 0-6, 8-10.
