The Mexico girls tennis varsity team will look a lot different this season.
Head coach Kim Costley said there will only be two returning varsity players — Yolitza Rios and Lea Sanchez — and two returning all-conference players from the team’s five. Bailey Christianson and Marali Herrera-Amaya finished first in the No. 1 doubles bracket a year ago to bring more experience to the roster of 15 — eight new to tennis.
“We are pretty inexperienced compared to the past several years,” Costley said. “We have several seniors and their leadership with the eight new players will help with the development of the team. The players on varsity will need to learn to be more consistent with their play. Regardless of who makes varsity, everyone will be moving up into new ranking positions.”
Out of Mexico’s six seniors, Kayden Higbee and Elise Galloway are two returning seniors who Costley hopes can bring the team up to speed. Costley said Jackie Lucas was a newcomer last year and should challenge for a varsity spot after her busy summer.
Mexico finished in the middle of the North Central Missouri Conference last season and hopes to have a good showing in the final year of the NCMC.
“We want to get better every day,” Costley said. “We tell the kids, 'Focus on today, get better today.’ There is a lot to learn, and you have to put in the time and effort."
