Cassandra Young had a busy night in goal for the Mexico girls.
The freshman goalkeeper recorded 17 saves in a 3-0 loss for the Lady Bulldogs (4-6, 1-3 NCMC) on Thursday at home to North Central Missouri Conference foe and district foe Moberly (6-2, 2-1 NCMC).
Moberly scored all three goals within eight minutes early in the second half, according to head coach Sarah Olson.
"They scored, and you could tell they just had momentum," Olson said. "Sometimes, momentum shifts are hard in any sport so we couldn't quite get the momentum shifted back."
Avery St. Clair had two goals and one assist and Ella Mathes had one goal for the Lady Spartans. They didn't get anything else thanks to the efforts from Young.
"She had a huge game," Olson said. "We're going to play teams that are better than us and move the ball faster than us. To make improvements on ourselves is all you can ask for in those games so I was pleased that we did that."
Olson said saw the improvements and a much better overall performance than Tuesday's 4-0 home loss to conference foe Marshall despite being down defender Scottie Smith and forward Claire Hudson. Because of that, the lineup had to shift a bit.
Outside midfielder Bailey Christianson played the defender position for the first time, according to Olson, and did a fine job. That has a domino effect to fill Christianson's usual spot.
"She had never played defense before, and you could not tell," Olson said. "She covered very well. She had some moments, as everyone does, but overall worked really hard and made the difference."
Thursday's game ended a four-game stretch where the Lady Bulldogs had to play four winning programs, including three consecutive conference opponents, following a 2-1 double-overtime win at home April 2 against conference foe Kirksville.
"We played stronger, a little more physical and smarter," Olson said. "From last Wednesday to tonight, we played four conference schools plus throw in Jefferson City. At the end of that half-marathon, it was nice to see all of the effort."
