The Mexico girls won back-to-back games last week away from Gary Filbert Court.
The Lady Bulldogs opened their North Central Missouri Conference schedule with a 62-40 win last Tuesday at Marshall and then won Thursday at Silex 53-30.
Head coach Makenzie Mudd said Mexico (4-3) had some early turnovers at Silex (2-2) but still had a 19-point lead at halftime. The 30 points is the least amount allowed by the Lady Bulldogs through seven games. Alyssa Miller led with 14 points, Claire Hudson followed with 11 points and Scottie Smith had 10 points.
“Silex has a small, very loud gym and the girls were not able to hear what we were saying from the bench for most of the game so they had to communicate effectively with each other on the floor,” Mudd said. “We did a great job of sharing the ball and creating opportunities for each other.”
Defense was also a key reason for victory at Marshall (2-5), Mudd said, helping eight of the 12 Lady Bulldogs who played score. Claire Hudson led with 28 points, six assists and four steals, Grace Hudson followed with 13 points, four assists and four steals, and Scottie Smith had nine points and six rebounds.
“We had a strong start to build a lead in the first quarter and stayed in an energetic mindset,” Mudd said. “Our defense definitely contributed to offensive runs and that allowed us to get a lot of different groups of players on the floor to work together throughout the game.”
Mexico plays at conference rival Fulton (1-4) at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7.
