Mexico girls wrestling fights for wins in home quad

Mexico girls wrestling made itself at home on Thursday.

In the first of several events that the Lady Bulldogs will host this season, they went 1-2 against district competition in their home quad on Gary Filbert Court. Mexico lost to Centralia 53-30 and Holt 54-30 but defeated Brookfield via tiebreaker after the score was knotted at 42.

Head coach Tony Senor said Thursday’s meet was the second event for Mexico after starting the season with a tournament in Wright City. The competition wasn’t easy with Centralia and Holt as rivals for Mexico in recent years and Brookfield being a three-time reigning state runner-up.

“We’re a very young team with a lot of freshmen,” Senor said. “Girls have wrestled before, but high school wrestling is a lot tougher than middle school so I expected this adversity. This adversity is going to help us improve and learn.”

Alexus Johns, Abby Bowen, Zuri Crews and Lilly Cuno each picked a pinfall victory during the night. Johns and Crews won matches against Brookfield while Bowen and Cuno were victorious against Holt.

Crews and Cuno are both freshmen but medaled in the Wright City tournament. Nine other freshmen took the mat for Mexico on Thursday.

“Zuri Crews fought her butt off and got a huge win tonight,” Senor said. “Lilly Cuno, we bumped her up to 105 against Centralia just because she wanted another match, but she went 2-1 on the night and got a huge district win against Holt.”

Johns and Bowen are the senior leaders on the team and each bring state experience. Senor likes how they look at the start of the season.

“They put a lot of weight and expectations on their shoulders,” Senor said. “I just want them to enjoy this year and wrestle for pure competition and for the love of the sport. Enjoy this last ride. I saw a lot of good things out of them.”

Mexico has another home quad this season against Hickman, Southern Boone and Palmyra and it hosts another dual against Centralia. The team also has its annual Brick City Classic tournament and it will host the Class 1 District 2 tournament to fill out its home schedule. The Lady Bulldogs go on the road next on Dec. 12 for the Carrollton Dual tournament.

“I saw a lot of fight and a lot of try out of them,” Senor said. “It wasn’t for a lack of trying that they lost. It was just a lack of skill and experience. That’s what we’re seeing right now, and that’s just in any sport or life in general.”
