Some Mexico Optimist Hounds Running Club kids had a rare chance in July.
Anna Poore and Lydia Bowen each competed in the 10u 1500 racewalk at the AAU Junior Olympics at Humble High School in the Houston, Texas, area from July 25-31. Poore and Bowen finished with personal-best times in a field that included 50 pre-registered athletes and five from Puerto Rico.
Bowen beat her previous personal-best time by one second with a 12:39.47, and Poore was two minutes faster than her previous best time with a 12:40.79. They each were among the 25 best athletes in the country.
“The kids had a blast outside of the track by going to the local beach and enjoying some local Tex-Mex cuisine,” head coach Jonathan Bowen said.
At the Show-Me State Games on July 19 at Battle High School in Columbia, all Mexico Hounds who attended the event came away with at least one top three finish in their respective events to qualify for a national meet. The meet, which is called the State Games of America, takes place once every two years at different college campuses in the country. The next State Games of America will be next July at Penn State University in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania.
“We will be doing fundraisers and such over the next year to help cover some of the costs for the kids to go,” Bowen said.
