The Mexico School District 59 tentatively plans to hold a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 on July 12.
The selected date was based off of a parent survey, which overwhelmingly wanted the district to host a traditional commencement.
In Gov. Mike Parson’s Show-Me Strong Recovery Plan, large gatherings could not happen until after July 6. This is dependent on if the state is in its third phase of reopening.
“We all want our Class of 2020 Bulldogs to have the experiences they deserve and have looked forward to,” high school Principal Brad Ellebracht said in a news release. “We also want to make sure we hold these events in ways that will not jeopardize the health of our community.”
The district also hopes to hold a junior/senior prom July 10 at the high school.
“In these uncertain times, we are unable to plan what social distancing requirements will look like in the coming months,” Ellebracht wrote in letter to parents. “While we hope to host these events and properly honor our seniors, we do plan to follow the guidelines from local, state and federal officials to help us plan for the safe participation of all involved.”
The district plans to release more information as plans develop. If circumstances prevent the district from hosting prom and graduation in July, then prom will be canceled and the district will have to make alternate plans for graduation.
