Mexico School District hires assistant superintendent

The Mexico School District announced the hiring of Dr. Robert Miles as the Assistant Superintendent for the 2022-2023 school year.

Currently, Miles serves as the 2021-2022 principal at Eugene Field Elementary School. He will officially begin his duties as Assistant Superintendent on July 1.

“It is an honor to be hired as the next Assistant Superintendent of Mexico Public Schools. I am excited at the prospect of being able to support all our students and staff.”

Miles chose education as his career path due to difficulty in school growing up, “I was in 13 schools in 13 years, and there were great teachers during that time that fostered my love of learning, certain hobbies, books, and collectibles.”

His Doctoral research focused on which factors made it more likely that students would drop out of school. The most important factors that impacted student success were relationships with the adults in the building, tying students to schools through clubs and activities, and student attendance. “These were the main factors that increased the likelihood that students would graduate. I want to be able to support students and do everything in my power to ensure that they learn and grow, like many people during my own educational career have done for me.”

Miles and his wife have been together for ten years. They have two daughters, Saffron, a Sophomore at the Kansas City Art Institute, and Grace, a junior at Fulton High School, and a son, Max, who is also currently a junior at Fulton High School.

He is a member of the Missouri State Teachers’ Association and the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals. Miles received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, and his Specialist and Doctorate degrees from William Woods University in Fulton. His hobbies include reading, education, art, art history, science, and making pottery.

Miles was a previous art teacher for 17 years in the Fulton district before becoming assistant principal at Columbia Public Schools for five years, serving at Derby Ridge Elementary and Mill Creek Elementary Schools.

Melissa Chastain, Superintendent of Mexico Public Schools, remarked, “Dr. Miles has a reputation for being an extraordinary leader who is kind, humble, hard-working, intelligent, and devoted to serving all students, staff, and families. We are very excited to announce Dr. Miles as Assistant Superintendent as we believe he can use his experience to relate to, support, and help lead our district.”

The Assistant Superintendent position became available when Mrs. Chastain was named Superintendent of Mexico Public Schools at the October 19, 2021 Board of Education meeting. She had been serving as Interim Superintendent since May of 2021.
